To celebrate Railway 200, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway has devised a 200 Trail that visitors can enjoy while travelling on the stunning heritage railway.
The 200 Trail is an exciting new experience for visitors, and is a key event in the national Railway 200 celebrations, which mark 200 years since the birth of Britain’s modern railway.
It is a year-long challenge, with the first 40 activities released this spring.
Among the activities included in the challenge are:
- Finding historic station clocks.
- Getting a ticket clipped by a Ticket Inspector.
- Sitting in a goods wagon at Goathland Tea Room.
- Counting how many steps there are in the famous Grosmont tunnel.
- Enjoying breathtaking views while following the Cinder Track from Whitby.
- Drawing a picture with the theme of springtime and entering it in the railway’s seasonal competition.
- Spotting a Highland cow near Levisham Station.

Also included in the 200 Trail is ‘The Pickering Pixie Trail’, which has been devised in association with Visit Pickering.
This trail encourages families to use a new digital trail to explore Pickering, while meeting virtual pixies along the way.
It will be launched on Saturday, 29th March at 10 am, followed throughout the day at timed intervals until 3 pm by events and activities, but visitors can join this event at any time.
As well as following the activities on the 200 Trail, visitors can track their miles on a downloadable guide that allows them to log their journeys along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering to Whitby while enjoying the sights, sounds, and nostalgia of steam and diesel travel.

The 200 Trail is the perfect opportunity for families and individuals to step back in time and enjoy the beauty of the North York Moors while celebrating of Britain’s railway history.

Spring is an ideal time to visit the railway, as from 22nd to 30th March, A4 Class Pacific No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley will be hauling trains, followed by Jubilee Class No. 45596 Bahamas from 5th to 13th April.
“The 200 Trail is a fantastic way to celebrate the legacy of the railway while offering a fun and interactive experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re travelling one mile or 200, there’s something for everyone to discover as part of Railway 200, and we can’t wait to welcome visitors on board to take part in this exciting challenge.”
