Pedestrian fatally injured by train in Wiltshire as investigation begins

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has launched an investigation after a pedestrian was struck by a train and fatally injured in .

The train involved was travelling at around 96mph when it hit the pedestrian at the Pewsey footpath crossing on the outskirts of the town.

This particular crossing provides access to the railway between the residential area of Pewsey and the countryside to the north.

The crossing has gates on either side and has signage with instructions on how to use the crossing.

The investigation will include consideration of:

  • the factors which may have affected the decisions and actions of the pedestrians as they used the crossing
  • any previous incidents at Pewsey footpath crossing and how these may be relevant to this accident
  • the management of risk at this crossing and Network Rail’s wider strategy for assessing and mitigating risks at footpath crossings
  • any relevant underlying factors.
