The Stephenson Steam Railway in North Tyneside is inviting visitors to enjoy a new hands-on driving experience, taking control of a classic British Rail Class 03 diesel locomotive.
Visitors will step into the cab of the 03078 diesel shunter.
Qualified instructors will show them how to operate the engine, including preparing, starting up, and manoeuvring the loco, as well as collecting wagons and hauling a freight train.
After they have completed the experience, the Railway will present them with a completion certificate and North Tyneside Steam Railway Association mug.
Participants will also be able to take a guided tour of the railway’s workshop, observing the work being carried out to restore and maintain historic locomotives. They will also have free time to explore the museum on the site.

The experience is available on the following Saturdays:
- 5 April
- 10 May
- 2 August
- 6 September
- 4 October
On each day, there will be a morning session from 9 am until 12 pm and an afternoon session from 1 pm until 4 pm. There will be spaces for two participants per session.
The Railway is charging £200 per person and is recommending the experience as a gift for railway enthusiasts.
Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. Visitors can book their space online.
The Stephenson Steam Railway is a two-mile industrial railway which passes the factories and businesses that it used to serve.
It has a large number of wagons and rail vehicles in its station yard at Middle Engine Lane. Its museum contains a range of steam, diesel and electric locomotives. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the cab of locomotive ‘Clio’, and to use a steam engine driving simulator.

The North Tyneside attraction teaches visitors about George and Robert Stephenson, the father and son who had a huge influence on the development of the steam locomotive, including designing the iconic locomotive, Rocket. Educational materials include animations, together with artefacts from the Stephensons’ time.
The Waggonway Tea Room offers light refreshments on selected days.
The Stephenson Steam Railway is a popular visitor attraction, which has increased its popularity over recent year through a partnership with the Tne and Wear Metro.
