Model railway manufacturer PECO Model Railways has acquired the iconic Scottish model railway retailer Harburn Hobbies.
Harburn Hobbies is a beloved model railway retailer based in Edinburgh, and the acquisition is a significant milestone for both companies as it will ensure the continued success of a business that dates back to the 1930s.
Originally founded in the Edinburgh suburb of Leith by Mr. Hargreaves and Mr. Burns, they combined their names to form the title of the now-famous retailer, Harburn Hobbies.
The business was purchased in the 1950s by Colonel Jimmy Innes, and then in 1966 was it was passed on to the Baird family.
Since then, the Baird family has upheld Harburn Hobbies reputation as a go-to destination for railway modellers both from Scotland and beyond and has enjoyed a close partnership with PECO.
The acquisition of Harburn Hobbies is a natural evolution of its longstanding relationship with PECO, which will allow Harburn Hobbies to benefit from PECO’s extensive resources and expertise while maintaining a comprehensive range of products and dedication to modellers of all levels.
PECO’s decision to acquire Harburn Hobbies came when it recognised that Bob and Gillian Baird were approaching retirement and wanted to ensure the retailer continued to thrive.
Harburn Hobbies is situated near Edinburgh city centre and with a tram stop conveniently placed right outside its door, very-aptly named Harburn Halt it is ideally located to serve all railway enthusiasts.
With its vision of sustaining and growing the model railway hobby, PECO has an ongoing commitment to supporting independent retailers.
The acquisition of Harburn Hobbies will be seamless for customers, as the retailer will retain the same friendly and knowledgeable staff.
During the transition period, Bob and Gillian Baird will remain closely involved in the business, and the store’s welcoming atmosphere and dedication to excellent customer service will remain unchanged.
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Pecorama at Beer in Devon, where PECO is based, has been giving away 50 pairs of tickets and half-price tickets for the 2025 season. PECO also produces one-off models such as a TT:120 Gauge seven-plank open wagon it produced for Kernow Model Rail Centre in the livery of Franks and Co of Guildford.

“We are delighted to bring Harburn Hobbies into the PECO family. As an institution in the model railway community, it plays a vital role in nurturing the hobby and we are committed to ensuring it continues to flourish for generations to come.”
Michael Pritchard, PECO Chairman
