With the upcoming work to demolish and completely rebuild the Greek Street roundabout in Stockport commencing later this month, Network Rail has released a 3D CGI video explaining what works will be undertaken at each separate stage from demolition through to completion.

From March 31, the roundabout will be closed for one full year, while the work is being carried out to replace the 67-year-old life-expired bridge it currently sits on.

The railway line on which this bridge crosses is the West Coast Main Line, which is the busiest mixed-used railway in Europe.

400 trains pass under the bridge every day.

Road closures and traffic diversions will be in place while the work is carried out, while train services will continue to run, though there will be some amendments to train services from 19-22 April 2025 over the Easter Holiday weekend with trains being diverted or replaced by buses.

A temporary bridge was built last December to divert electricity and water supplies away from the condemned bridge. Workers will gradually begin removing the road and pavement surfaces to reach the bridge deck.

During August, the last of the 200 concrete beams on the existing 58-metre structure will be removed before work on the new bridge starts.

“We’re replacing the Greek Street bridge in Stockport to keep the railway below and road users above safe for years to come.

This video is a fantastic way to explain how complex the work to replace the bridge is. It brings to life this the true scale of the work required.

We are very grateful for the cooperation of the local community during the work. I know that closing the roundabout for a year will disrupt the daily lives of the local community, and I am very sorry for the inconvenience this will cause.”
