With this Friday, 14th February, being Valentine’s Day, London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is telling the stories of some of the most heart-warming romances that have developed on railway journeys.

Natt and Nick

Natt and Nick have a shared passion for railways. They met online while Natt was studying in Durham and Nick in Lincoln.

Separated by more than 100 miles, both cities are served by LNER on the East Coast Main Line, which enables them to stay connected via their favourite form of transport.

Their first in-person date was in 2023 at a nature reserve near Durham railway station, a peaceful place but in full view of the railway lines where they watched LNER Azuma trains pass by.

Since then they have travelled extensively, including in June 2023 when they walked the East Coast Main Line from Berwick-upon-Tweed to the small Scottish village of Burnmouth, where they witnessed the inaugural journey of the named Azuma train celebrating Pride named Together.

Nick is a popular YouTuber who features a number of railway lines, you can watch one of his videos below:

Jess and Andrew

Jess and Andrew both studied in Edinburgh, but at different universities. Whilst travelling home for the festive season in December 2019, Andrew was forced to travel on a different service than the one he had planned.

That train was particularly busy, and in one of the few available seats, Andrew sat next to Jess.

During the journey, Jess and Andrew chatted at length, and Andrew made sure he gave Jess his mobile number before he left the train.

They met up for coffee in the new year, and over the next few years occasionally kept in touch.

Two years later, in January 2022, Jess and Andrew met in Edinburgh for their first official date, following which love continued to blossom, and they became engaged in 2024.

Victor and Angela

Victor and Angela met by chance on a journey to London, and after striking up a conversation romance blossomed.

They were sitting next to each other on a train from Darlington to London King’s Cross, with Victor on his way home and Angela on her way to a talk.

Finding they had much in common, Angela promised Victor, the stranger she met on a train, she would email him.

Angela’s email prompted a swift reply from Victor with what Angela claims was a thousand questions. Their emails turned to phone calls, and eventually an in-person date when Angela took another journey by LNER train to London.

Angela was living in Hartlepool in the North of England, and in 2021 Victor moved from London to live with Angela, and they married in September 2024.

Ahead of Valentine’s Day, LNER has a number of inspirations for Romantic City Breaks in its guide to the destinations perfect for a romantic getaway.

“At LNER we like to put heart into everyone.s journey so it.s wonderful to hear of so many stories of people finding love on our line. We.re delighted that so many couples have either met on an LNER train, or used our trains to stay connected to someone special.”

Stuart Thomas, Communications Director at LNER
