Update: 22nd February – Lines have now reopened, but delays and cancellations are expected until 12:00
A landslip has closed the West Coast Main Line near Beattock, and a Do Not Travel warning has been issued.
No trains are running between Carlisle / Motherwell and Edinburgh and these may be severely delayed or cancelled.
Passengers are being advised not to travel north of Preston for the remainder of the day.
Avanti West Coast way that trains will start and terminate at Preston. Tickets will be able to be used on Saturday 22nd February. Ticket acceptance is in place with CrossCountry, London North Eastern Railway, ScotRail, Northern and TransPennine Express.
TransPennine Express say that you cannot travel between Preston (Lancs) and Edinburgh or Glasgow Central, with a similar ticket acceptance in place as with Avanti West Coast.

As people are asking – why can’t trains run to Carlisle? If it’s just for the operational convenience of Avanti because Preston is easier to turn crews and trains around, then tough. Let the crews get bussed down from Edinburgh/Glasgow to Carlisle.
as someone at Preston on the day. i do have to agree with the decision to terminate at Preston. we just have more room to put trains.
Whatever happened to the Thunderbirds, this sounds like a perfect job for them, put them on at Carlisle and take the train through Dumfries, a bit longer train journey but still get there,
Railways are now getting lazy and can’t even put buses on just dump passengers anywhere they like. NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE, time for heads to roll
they couldn’t even get enough buses to Preston. they were piling people into taxis to Glasgow.
I live south of MKC. When the illegal eagles play at Lancaster I normally go as the venue and hotel are excellent. Fortunately I couldn’t go to friday nights show having seen the difficulty in getting home.It was the same in 2023 with avanti,no trains. I am disabled and a senior railcard holder. Why are avanti allowed to give such an appalling service. Why can’t trains be terminated at Carlisle due to the landslip. Why can’t avanti be terminated?
They will he when franchise runs out but a landslide can’t be avoided
I was stuck at Glasgow C today trying to get home from model rail and the avanti stuff member said they was no ticket acceptance in place and we had to fend for ourselves. Paid to get a train to Carlisle via Kilmarnock and now an overnight stay in Carlisle
It seems regrettable that Avanti give up serving stations north of Preston to Carlisle in circumstances like this. There must be many passengers for Lancastrr, Oxenholme, Penrith and Carlisle who are inconvenienced unnecessarily.
It was a right mess at Preston today. People and trains everywhere
