Work has resumed on onstructing a new footbridge and lift at the Central Line station at Northolt to provide step-free access to the island platform.

The station is on the West Ruislip branch of the Central line, and the footbridge and lift will allow step-free access from the street to the platforms.

Boarding ramps will be provided to help passengers with accessibility needs to board trains.

When complete, it will make a big difference to people with mobility issues, parents with pushchairs, carers, and older residents.

Construction will not require closure of the station, which will remain open throughout the work, and all work is scheduled for completion by the summer of 2026.

However, the public toilets will close in April this year, but new, accessible toilet facilities will open when all work has been completed.

Temporary fencing will be erected around the areas being worked on, which will reduce the width of the platform, but during peak hours, station staff will be on the platform to keep passengers safe.

While the construction is ongoing, Transport for London will keep residents and local representatives updated about how the work is progressing.

Work was due to start several years ago, but was suspended because of the Covid pandemic.

Leyton station in East London at the eastern end of the Central line is also benefitting from step-free access improvements, with work there planned to start later this month.

“Northolt Tube station becoming step-free will benefit thousands of customers in the area and make the station more accessible for those using it. We will continue to work at pace to identify where step-free schemes can make a difference to our customers, and work with partners to deliver those schemes. Northolt station will remain open during these works, and we will work with contractors to ensure we minimise any disruption to our neighbours while this crucial construction work is completed.”
