In an effort to attract new volunteers, the at Tunbridge Wells in Kent is holding a recruitment open day on 25 January 2025.

The volunteering Open Day is being held at the railway’s station and will start at 10.30 am and finish at around 14:00.

Potential volunteers will be given a guided tour of the Spa Valley Railway to see what goes on behind the scenes and hear about the different parts of the railway.

There will also be the opportunity to ask questions of other volunteers who are already working on the railway.

The railway offers a flexible and friendly work environment suited to all ages, and volunteers do not need to offer a minimum number of hours volunteering effort. There is also no requirement to have had previous experience.

Operate on a five-mile line between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge, the railway is centrally located in Royal Tunbridge Wells just a five-minute walk from the historic Pantiles.

Throughout the year, the railway runs special events, including the Murder Mystery Trains, Kent Gin Train and Kent Cheese Trains, which have all started running for this year, and steam and diesel train driving experiences. There is also plenty for enthusiasts to enjoy, especially during its popular steam galas, which last year featured two special Scottish weekends.

“Our railway is only able to operate thanks to the wonderful army of volunteers, but we are now in a position where we urgently need new recruits to join our happy team to help run our passenger train service at weekends and in school holidays between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge Station. The positions available include station staff, shop assistants and catering staff. Volunteering can be very rewarding and I have been volunteering at the Spa Valley Railway since I was 14! It’s a great way to meet new friends and learn new skills and anyone interested in finding out more can attend our first volunteering event at Tunbridge Wells West Station at 10.30am on Saturday 25 January 2025.”
