Investigation launched as London train crashes into buffers

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has launched an investigation after a service crashed into the buffers at .

On the 13th December 2024, the 14:50 Southern service from Victoria to London Bridge collided with the buffers on platform 12 at London Bridge.

The train entered the station at 13.6mph and was travelling at 2.3mph when it hit the buffers. Thankfully there were no injuries to the driver or passengers but damage was caused to the train and buffers.

The investigation will consider:

  • the actions of the train driver involved and anything which may have influenced them
  • the management of the train driver, including their training and competence
  • the arrangements in place to manage and control the risks associated with buffer stop collisions
  • any underlying management factors, including any actions taken in response to previous relevant safety recommendations.
