The Customer and Community Investment Fund run by London North Eastern Railway has seen its highest volume of applications since the fund was set up.
Over 470 funding applications have been submitted by charities and good causes based within 15 miles of the LNER route, spanning from the Scottish Highlands to London King’s Cross.
These applications were received within a few months since the opening of the submission window in July.

Projects that align with LNER’s vision of being ‘Better for People, Better for Places, Better for Planet’ are invited to apply.
The ‘Better for People’ category has received over 400 separate applications.
In the past year, over 16,000 individuals have benefited from 23 varied projects backed by the fund. These projects have promoted inclusivity, mental health, skill enhancement, and community unity.
Among the initiatives funded are specialized workshops for young adults with learning disabilities, support programs for the elderly to remain engaged in their communities, conservation efforts for fragile ecosystems, and projects to increase salmon populations in Scottish rivers.

“We’re thrilled that nearly 500 charities and groups have taken the time to make an application to our Customer and Community Investment Fund. The projects we support have such a profound and positive impact on the lives of so many people. We are really looking forward to learning more about this year’s applicants and supporting more amazing causes in 2025.”
Rachel Wilson, LNER’s Community Investment Manager
Several Train operating companies across the country run similar funds, which are worth applying to if your charity or organisation shares the views and goals of that train company. Charities can get as much as £20,000, as seen in the South West earlier this year, with many other charities and community projects receiving investment, which has aided them in creating friendly spaces or tackling issues in their local communities.
