The Moorland Railway and Gardens are once again open on Sunday 1st September from 2pm – 4pm.
This time the railway will be raising funds for the Martin House Children’s Hospice, a charity offering hospice care for children and young people throughout West, North, and East Yorkshire.
Martin House delivers family-centred care for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, available at the hospice or within the comfort of their own homes.
Having visited the railway myself a few years previously, the miniature train rides at the Moorland Railway and Gardens offer a charming experience for all ages.
The railway boasts miniature steam, diesel and electric train rides that wind their way through the beautiful gardens, providing a distinctive and picturesque perspective of the area, offering enjoyable afternoon out ideal for families and rail enthusiasts.
The locomotives and rolling stock are carefully preserved and are run by dedicated volunteers, guaranteeing a pleasant trip.
The track layout typically features elements like miniature bridges, tunnels, and well-manicured areas, enhancing the ride’s enchanting appeal and makes it that bit more exciting.
Volunteers at Moorland Railway and Gardens are the lifeblood of the miniature train rides. Coming from diverse backgrounds, they all share a passion for trains.
Their dedication is evident as they devote their time and energy to maintaining the trains and ensuring that the rides are safe and enjoyable for every visitor.
The volunteers possess a passion for railways and miniature engineering. They frequently talk with guests, responding to inquiries about the trains and the railway. Moreover, the volunteers contribute beyond train operations; they maintain the gardens and aid in the coordination of diverse events and activities.
This month marks the fifth event, with each one raising approximately £1,000 so far this year. A tremendous amount of effort is invested in each event, thanks to the wonderful volunteers who contribute their spare time to its success. Trains operate all afternoon, and with the occasional bake sale featuring homemade cakes, scones, and biscuits,, along with a plant stall and a tombola.
For those wishing to attend the Sunday 1st September running day at the railway and gardens, the address is: Moorland House, Staintondale, North Yorkshire, YO13 0EW
Those that do decide to visit are told to ‘take a turn at the Falcon on the A171 and follow the ribbons!’
This is not the only railway event in Yorkshire in the coming weeks. The Wensleydale Railway is hosting industrial diesels at a special event over the August Bank Holiday weekend, while later in September, the NYMRs Autumn steam gala takes place from 26 – 29 September.
