Major engineering work to affect trains in Cambridgeshire this Autumn

Passengers using the and Ely lines are advised to review their travel plans prior to departure this autumn, as significant engineering and station building works are scheduled to impact most weekend services from mid-September through to the end of November.

Construction of the new Cambridge South station will be ongoing, alongside upgrades to the track, signals, and power systems between Branch Junction and Cambridge station, in preparation for the station’s opening next year.

To facilitate ongoing work, a number of autumn weekends have been designated as periods when trains will not operate.

This is to ensure engineers can work safely on and adjacent to the mainline.

Consequently, weekend services between Cambridge and Audley End, as well as Cambridge and , will be disrupted on the specified dates:

  • Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September
  • Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October
  • Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November
  • Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November
  • Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 November

Bus replacement will be available to passengers so they can complete their journeys.

Additionally, weekend engineering work is scheduled to the north of Cambridge. This will include renewing signalling equipment, reinforcing bridge structures near Ely and Manea, enhancing drainage, and conducting general track maintenance.

Weekend rail services between Cambridge and Ely North Junction, as well as those to , King’s Lynn, and Norwich, will experience disruptions on these dates:

  • Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September
  • Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September
  • Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October
  • Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 October
  • Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October

Passengers planning to travel through Ely and Cambridge on autumn weekends are advised to review their journey plans in advance with National Rail Enquiries or their respective train operators: Cross Country, East Midlands Railway, Great Northern, Greater Anglia and Thameslink. 

Once more, bus replacement services will also run on the above dates, so customers can complete their journeys.

  1. Can’t wait for this station to open, I’m sure it will be one of the busiest servicing the biomedical campus, Addenbrookes and Trumpington area.

  2. With the new railway station south of Cambridge. The junction just south of Cambridge South station could do with a flyover or underpass so that there would be minimal disruption just like at Hitchin and Werrington Junction Peterborough on the East Coast Main Line.
