Organisers of the world-famous Glastonbury Festival have released an announcement asking those planning to attend the festival to be “climate heroes” by reaching the festival site by train.

They have reminded ticket holders that the star performers sometimes come by train too, as Foo Fighters lead singer Dave Grohl did last year.

The annual music event is located at Worthy Farm, near Glastonbury in , and this year’s line-up is set to include Squeeze, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, Jamie Webster, the Staves, and the Skatalites.

The closest station to the festival site is , which is located on the Reading to Taunton line, and is served by Great Western Railway.

Great Western Railway will be providing extra services to Castle Cary during the festival, as has been the case in previous years too.

There will be direct trains from , Reading, Bristol, and , and a free shuttle bus to Worthy Farm will be available to festival ticket holders.

The initiative to encourage attendees to arrive by train is due to the well-known environmental benefits of trains.

Some data has shown that travelling by train can save 92% in carbon emissions compared to travelling by car.

The Glastonbury Festival 2024 will run from Wednesday, 26 June to Sunday, 30 June.

  1. Hopefully enough rolling stock can be mustered to meet the demand. We need to see the railways do much more to cater for these sorts of events in future, as well as tourist and holiday traffic generally. That means putting back some of the capacity that has been removed in terms of track and platforms, as well as maintaining sufficient and appropriate rolling stock. Away you go..
