London Transport Museum in Covent Garden has nine days of fun activities planned for families over the May half-term with children going free!

An exciting array of family activities can be found at the London Transport Museum this May half-term including:

‘My Visit to London Transport Museum’ activity:

  • Runs each day, all day throughout the galleries
  • Best suited to children aged 5+ years
  • Activity sheets will be available from the ticket desk.

Curiosities are afoot for visitors as they are invited to explore the Museum’s galleries whilst collecting facts, drawing pictures and taking part in tasks on their activity sheets.

There is a good selection of tasks for this activity such as finding the big red Routemaster bus and working out how many passengers can travel on it, discovering what shape Underground tunnels are and counting the wheels on the historic Omnibus. When the tasks are complete, children can create their own origami book at home which will be a lovely and crafty reminder of their visit to the Museum. The ‘make and take’ book will feature fun activity sections in a bid to encourage visitors to interact with the Museum collection.

  • The drop in activity runs each day between 10.30 and 16.00 in the Transportorium Garden
  • Best suited to children aged 3 to 12 years

The get ‘wheely’ activity is an artist-led drop-in workshop which supports children in getting creative by making tracks and encourages exploration and experimentation. Younger visitors can also take part in a communal piece of art with a good collection of vehicular toys which they can use to make bright coloured marks. Older children can design their own spirograph wheel design using a variety of London vehicle templates.

Storytelling with an Underground Mouse:

  • The storytelling will take place each day at 11.00, 12.00, 13.00, 14.30 and 15.30 and lasts for around 20 minutes in the Transportorium Garden
  • This activity runs on a first come first serve basis with a maximum of around 10 families
  • Best suited for children under 7 years

Children under 7 can relax whilst filling their imaginations with the fantastic story ‘The Curious Adventure of the Underground Mouse’.

Families can also enjoy the following at the London Transport Museum:

  • A visit to the Museum galleries gives a chance to explore the Museum’s newest exhibition Legacies: London Transport’s Caribbean Workforce. Children are encouraged to try out a new, fun, flag exhibit that asks them to guess the Caribbean nation belonging to each flag. Small family-friendly printed labels will also allow younger children to ask questions about the experiences of the Caribbean people that made London their home
  • See historic buses, trams and Tube trains from London’s past
  • Visit the Future Engineers gallery which features hands-on interactive exhibits. Why not try out a palm scanner which is the latest in ticketing technology, ‘drive’ a modern Elizabeth line train, and also enjoy seeing their face on the cover of The Engineer magazine
  • Visit the life-size recreation of the tunnelling shield that helped build the world’s first electric Tube railway in the Digging Deeper Gallery. The gallery also tells the history of tunnelling, from the feats of Victorian engineering pioneer James Greathead up to modern-day Crossrail
  • Explore the All Aboard family play zone where young visitors can have fun playing conductor on a bus, repair a mini Tube train with toy spanners, and even work in the ‘Lost Property Office’

All of the May half-term activities will be taking place at London Transport Museum, Covent Garden Piazza and will run from 10:00 until 16:00 from Saturday the 28th of May to Sunday the 5th of June 2022. The London Tourism Awards saw the London Transport Museum named recently as London Visitor Attraction of the Year.

In order to visit London Transport Museum, an annual pass and a timed ticket is required. An annual pass is valid for 12 months and allows entry right through the year. An unlimited annual pass costs £21, concessions £20 and an off-peak annual pass is £18.50 with children going free!
