Siemens Mobility has received an order for 100 locomotives from the rail vehicle rental company Railpool.

Railpool is one of the leading rail vehicle rental companies in Europe. The contract Siemens Mobility signed was a framework agreement to supply 100 of its Vectron locomotives. At contract signing, Railpool placed their first call for 70 of the locomotives.

The locomotives will be of different variants for operation in up to 18 countries on north-south and east-west European rail corridors. The Vectrons ordered by Railpool have a maximum power at the wheel of 6.4 megawatts and a top speed of 200 km/h. They will be equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS), as well as the relevant national train control systems. Last year Railpool ordered 20 Vectron MS locomotives from Siemens Mobility.

Siemens Mobility has sold 1,270 Vectron locomotives to 61 customers and to date have travelled over 500 million fleet kilometres. The locomotives are approved for operation in most European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Turkey.

Albrecht Neumann, CEO Rolling Stock of Siemens Mobility, said “This major order confirms our successful partnership with Railpool and the excellent quality of our locomotives. By ordering the Vectron MS, Railpool has not only opted for a very powerful and highly reliable locomotive, but chose a multi-system version that will be able to provide cross-border rail transport without changing locomotives. This will ensure maximum operational flexibility for our customer and enable them to react quickly to changing market conditions.”

Torsten Lehnert, CEO of Railpool GmbH, said “It’s becoming more and more important for our customers to be able to use their locomotives flexibly based on the needs in different European countries. With the purchase of additional Vectron locomotives with universal applicability, we are responding to these market needs and are also sending a positive and ecofriendly signal in a growing railway sector.”
