Plans revealed for Assisted Travel Lounge at Manchester Piccadilly

Network Rail is transforming a disused room near platform one at Manchester Piccadilly station into a lounge designed for use by passengers who need assisted travel help.

The £800,000 investment will result in a quiet and welcoming waiting space for people with additional mobility and sensory needs. The lounge will have a dedicated team of staff to help them.

Major train operators that serve the station have welcomed news of the investment in the lounge for their passengers.

The lounge will include:

• accessible seating and seven wheelchair bays;
• an accredited Changing Places toilet facility;
• a sensory space for people who find railway stations overwhelming;
• a staffed welcome desk;
• a water bowl for service dogs.

The lounge is being designed with guidance from Manchester Piccadilly’s disability task and finish group, which includes disabled people, their carers, and advocates, to ensure it meets the needs of those who will use it. Work on the new lounge will start in June and expected to be complete by the autumn.

Besides the new lounge, assisted travel is offered to all passengers who need help getting between trains and the station concourse. Last year, nearly 22,300 people used the service at Piccadilly, whilst before the coronavirus pandemic, the figure was around 44,500. Major rail stations are intimidating places for many rail passengers and for those with a range of disabilities the experience can even put some of us ‘off’ using rail travel, so the fact that the design and location of this important facility involved the views and requirements of a group of disabled people is a significant move towards future cooperation on such projects across the rail network.”
