DB Regio has chosen Alstom to supply 17 modern high-capacity Coradia Stream electric multiple units for use on Germany’s Main-Weser Network.

The multiple units will bring 15% more space than the vehicles currently in use alongside greater comfort, improved access and free Wi-Fi for passengers travelling on the well used Main-Weser Express line.

Made up of 13 four-car and 4 five-car trainsets, the new trains will run on the subnetwork between Frankfurt, Giessen, Marburg and Kassel and will work with the timetable change set to come into action for 15th December 2024.

The new trains will provide greater capacity for peak hour services alongside the onboard improvements for passengers of extra seating, space and free wifi, bringing an enhanced travel experience.

Müslüm Yakisan, President of Alstom’s DACH region, said:

“We are very pleased that DB Regio has chosen our modern Coradia Stream high-capacity train for their RE 30 line between Frankfurt and Kassel to the East. These comfortable trains will provide passengers on the Main-Weser Express with a premium travel experience and additional space,”

“DB Regio’s decision is further evidence that Alstom has precisely the right product to meet our customers’ need to increase capacity.”

Maik Dreser, Chairman of the DB Regio Mitte Regional Directorate, said:

“We are very proud and happy that RMV has chosen DB Regio in the “Main-Weser” award procedure. With the new, modern double-decker vehicles, we are sending a strong signal – for climate protection and strengthening of the railways,”

The four-car Coradia Stream features 2 double-deck control cars and 2 single-deck middle cars bringing 420 seats, the five-car version comes with another double-deck middle car making 540 seats. When running in a double traction combination of the four and five-car units, capacity will rise to 960 seats which is greater than any other regional train used on the line.

The new trains are of a modular design and bring passengers facilities such as variable seating, expandable bicycle compartments or generous multi-purpose areas.

First-class sections will include four-seater groups with large wall-mounted tables, with second class featuring compact wall-mounted tables as well as free Wi-Fi and power sockets for every seat.

The benefits of the Coradia Stream will mean comfortable travel for passengers whilst keeping fully connected throughout their journey for both first and second class sections.

Easy access for passengers is also a priority for DB Regio with the new trains featuring a 600mm access height for all entrances and will mean swift, barrier-free access at the majority of stations. Current double-deck vehicles require ramps to board however the new trains will provide ramp-free access for those with reduced mobility.

Alstom will be undertaking the assembly of trains at their site in Salzgitter, Germany, with the project office, project and contract management, product validation and commissioning, documentation, training and warranty all to be carried out in Germany.
