The rail operator has been recognised for providing social value throughout the sustainable fit out of their new headquarters in Pontypridd.
Transport for Wales (TfW) were given the Prosperous Future Generations Award at The Social Value for Future Generations Awards during the online ceremony which was held as part of the National Social Value Conference: Wales, which took place on the 16th and 17th of November.
Celebrating innovation, leadership and best practice of social value in Wales, The Social Value for Future Generations Awards also connect with the Well-being of Future Generations Act.
The work recognised by the award was given due to TfWs work ensuring a sustainable transition to the new headquarters in Llys Cadwyn. The rail operator worked with Rype Office and social enterprise, Merthyr Institute for the Blind, and saw the refurbishing of current furniture and the use of second-hand furniture instead of buying new which can be a large contributor to the carbon footprint of new facilities. Just 19% of the furniture at the site is new, with 13% sourced locally, which saved almost 93 tonnes of CO2.
The new headquarters also includes solar power and water harvesting systems and has given local employment opportunities for both the construction and fit-out. The interior of the building has also been created attentively to reflect TfW’s organisational values and the needs of its staff. A strong emphasis on harnessing collaborative working practices is a key theme, with equality, diversity and inclusion also influencing the interior design which includes a reflection room and non-binary changing rooms and toilets for both staff and visitors.
Natalie Rees, TfW’s Sustainable Development Manager, said:
“We’re delighted that the TfW team’s hard work in delivering our successful and sustainable move to Pontypridd has been recognised. Sustainable development is at the heart of everything we do, and we work to meet the aims of the Well-being of Future Generations Act and help contribute to a more sustainable Wales”.
