At Northallerton station, Network Rail has started on a £3million project to make the station more accessible for passengers.

On both platforms, there will be a lift installed to make both of the platforms easier for passengers, and both lifts will link to the subway

The main stages of work will start this June and will be expected to last until March 2022.

Everyone that lives in the area of the station has been sent a letter explaining what is being completed by Network Rail.

The station will still be open for the passengers to use whilst the work is completed, to keep the disruption to a minimum for everyone. Also, work will be completed at night.

Paul Rutter, Route Director for Network Rail’s East Coast route, said: “We are committed to improving access for passengers and this vital work will make it much easier for people to move around Northallerton station.

“Since receiving the Access for All funding, we’ve worked with local stakeholders and accessibility groups to find the best option for passengers, whilst working to minimise disruption as much as possible throughout the project.”

Kathryn O’Brien, Customer Experience Director for TransPennine Express said: “The introduction of lifts at Northallerton station is fantastic news for our customers.

“The accessibility of our services is very important to us and I’m sure this will come as very welcome news to those with additional mobility requirements and those travelling with young children and luggage.

“We’re working closely with Network Rail to keep disruption to a minimum and would like to thank customers for their patience while the work takes place.”

Rishi Sunak, MP for Richmond (Yorks), welcomed the start of work on the project. He said: “I am pleased that funding has been sourced from the Government’s Access for All programme. The lifts will make a big difference to Northallerton Station.

“When completed I am sure these improvements will be very much appreciated by those who experience access issues at present.”
