The first Bo-Bo Class 91 electric locomotive has been sent to be scrapped in Nottingham, and Dawn Hazle has very kindly allowed us to share her image with you.

Whilst a number of Mark 4 sets have already been sent for scrap, 91132 is the first to be formally scrapped.

Dawn Hazle managed to capture 91132 at Sims Metals Scrapyard in Nottingham.

Known to some as ‘Lucky’, this 91 survived both the Hatfield and Great Heck rail accidents, and was renumbered 91132 after its overhaul in 2001, it was numbered 91023 prior to this.

Built in September 1990, 91132 wore the City of Durham nameplate and Employer Pledge artwork but is now withdrawn after being replaced by Hitachi Azumas.

91108 and 91103 are two out of service Class 91s that have been stripped for parts but have not been formally scrapped.

It was announced in 2020 that LNER would retain 10 Class 91s until 2023, with an extension available until 2024.

This extension includes ten Class 91 locomotives, including 91101 ‘Flying Scotsman’, 91107 ‘Skyfall’, 91109 ‘Sir Bobby Robson’, 91110 ‘Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’, 91111 ‘For The Fallen’, 91114 ‘Durham Catherdral’ and 91130 ‘Lord Mayor of Newcastle’.

  • At a time when the government is banging on about going green and there seems to be Greenpeace lovers everywhere it seems a very strange move to be scrapping electric locomotives with at least another 10 years life left.
A similar fate seems to be on the horizon for the Class 365 which would have been a better substitute for the Class 769 upgrades.

  • OKAY i think the other condemned 2 cannot be saved and it’s too late.

Change my mind if anything else happens!

  • It is an absolute shame to see the Class 91’s withdrawn from service and scrapped, at a tender age of 30. Surely they could have found new uses or services for them, or to bolster current services in a post pandemic world.

  • It is sad to see one go but there is no need for all of them. 91103, 91104 and 91108 have all been stripped for parts and are expected to be scrapped soon. With luck only these 4 will get scrapped and the others will find new jobs (freight use?).

  • I’m quite gutted this Power Car Loco isn’t going to be Preserved, Would of been interesting as this was ever so lucky to have survived both the Hatfield & Great Heck Rail Disasters of October 2000 & February 2001 respectively.

I do hope at least 1 (or 2) are Preserved for furhter use with the UK Preservation Movement… The Intercity 225 is one of my favoruite Classic British Rail High-Speed Passenger Express Trains… Along with the Intercity 125.
