CrossCountry has announced that a refurbishment programme will increase the number of seats on a number of their routes.
Currently, six two-carriage Turbostar units are used on the routes throughout both the East Midlands and East Anglia, serving Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham and Cambridge, and Stansted Airport.
An additional coach will be added, fitted with new seat covers, carpets, improved Wi-Fi and a fresh coat of paint on the outside.
The first three coach set is in traffic, with the second scheduled to enter service by February. The other four should be completed by May 2021.
CrossCountry's Regional Director for East Midlands & East Anglia Richard Morris said: “We currently run a mixture of two-carriage and three-carriage trains on our regional services linking the East Midlands and East Anglia with the West Midlands, so we are delighted to be able to add some extra peak time capacity”.
“As we welcome people back to rail after COVID-19, being able to plan more three-carriage trains for the busiest times of travel on our Leicester, Nottingham, Cambridge and Stansted Airport routes will mean many more of our customers can get a seat for their whole journey and travel in comfort”.

If East Midlands Railway were to inherit more Class 170 Turbostar DMUs from ScotRail, TfW, Southern (Ex-Class 171) and West Midlands Railway. Then perhaps replace the Class 158 and cascade them to other operators (ie-GWR, Northern and/or TfW).
And to allow the Class 170s to operate on rural lines in the East Midlands including Nottingham-Skegness, Peterborough-Lincoln, Nottingham-Norwich and Stansted Airport, Nottingham-Derby, Sheffield-Nottingham & Derby, Derby-Matlock, Nottingham-Grantham & Worksop and many other routes in the East Midlands. That EMR could allow the Class 170s to operate on.
what a joke with one extra carriage when there are plenty of HST sets in store which would be so much better
