has announced that it has carried out record levels of enhanced cleaning to keep passengers safe on trains and at stations.

In recent months, more than 140 swab tests have been completed since July to test for traces of Covid-19 at touchpoints. All tests have returned negative results.

The train operator now has more cleaners than train drivers to cover the East Coast Main Line to make sure the risk of virus transmission is as low as possible.

LNER Director of Safety and Operations, Warrick Dent, said: “The safety of our customers and staff is always our top priority. We recognise the importance of customers not only being safe but feeling safe, which is why we continue to provide reassurance to customers of the significantly enhanced measures we are providing to operate a ‘Covid Secure' service.”

Since March, there have been more than 307,000 hours of cleaning stretching the 936 miles of LNER route, and more than 184,000 litres of cleaning chemicals used.
