In order to provide step-free access to Spalding's platform two and other upgrades to improve passenger experience, Network Rail set out on fitting lifts and associated connections to the footbridge, new lighting and CCTV system.

Work commencement during December 2019, with an original completion date on June 2020, but the lockdown caused by COVID-19 slowed progress, to the extent that the delayed finishing date on September 2020 has been set.

On top of the originally planned work, the reduced passenger numbers were taken advantage of by Network Rail's team to improve drainage and surfacing on platform two.

Route Director for Network Rail's East Midlands Route Gary Walsh said: “This is a vital project to improve accessibility for passengers at Spalding station and we are sorry that work is taking longer than originally planned. Due to social distancing guidelines, we needed to change our working methods to protect the safety of our workers. We have done this, and work is able to continue, however it has had an impact on the completion date of the project. We'd like to thank passengers for their continued patience, and we look forward to them reaping the benefits.”

East Midland Railway's Area Manager for Lincolnshire Sophie Hammond said: “When completed, this project will massively improve accessibility at the station, which will open up travel opportunities and make using the station much easier for our passengers at Spalding.”

  • Now that this is nearly finished, I believe the back area has to be sorted when the weather is better, would it not make sense to open up the back area on to park road and have an access to the station at the rear. this saving a lot of people having to walk or drive around. I know there is a bridge further along the track but this has no disable access or pushchair facility

  • Spalding railway station does need some improvements including a new footbridge with lifts to make the station step-free accessible. Good luck with this Network Rail.
