Embankments along the West Coast mainline in Cumbria are being upgraded as part of a £3.5m investment.
The embankments between Oxenholme and Carlisle are being upgraded as part of the Great North Rail Project.
The work involves making the embankments less steep and should help prevent landslips. In addition, the ground is to be made more secure.
The work should be completed this month, with the railway having been kept open throughout.
The embankments were damaged during Storm Desmond and are constructed from a mix of ash and local material excavated from nearby cuttings
Richard Hockney, project manager at Network Rail, said: “This essential work as part of the Great North Rail Project will make this busy passenger and freight route more reliable in the future.
“Our teams have worked hard to secure a total of 1.5km of embankment over the last few months, working around challenges brought on by Covid-19.
“I’m proud to be delivering more reliable journeys for passengers and freight services using this vital stretch of railway in Cumbria.”

The embankment on the West Coast Main Line looks better and hopefully it should be sustained to keep the railway tracks and overhead wires level. Nice work from Network Rail.
