The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust Ltd has published an update on the overhaul progress on their London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) A4 Class No.60007 (4498) “Sir Nigel Gresley”.

Unfortunately, the National Railway Museum, where 60007’s overhaul is taking place, is closed due to the COVID-19 lockdown, with the team progressing at their homes where safe to do so.

Members of the team have machined the knuckle pin to add the keyways and cotter slots, completed the new valve guide bolts and began work on the lubricator drive linkage.

Good use has been made of classmate 60009 “Union of South Africa” being stored at York, as the team have been able to compare both engines before the lockdown. One interesting feature has been the Cartazzi suspension set up, which on 60009 provides a much easier way to swap springs without too much disassembly work. Drawings have been produced of the arrangement, with little cost involved if the Trust adopts the setup.

Other work on the trailing truck has seen the Trust partner with another LNER loco group to order Cartazzi spring boxes. Almost complete with a small amount of work left, the new left Cartazzi bronze bearing awaits for contractors to return to work before being finished.
