The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust have published their last winter maintenance update on new build London and North Eastern Railway A1 Peppercorn No. 60163 “Tornado”, along with storage plans during the current COVID-19 outbreak.

Following the completion of all winter maintenance work, “Tornado” had to pass a series of tests and inspections before being allowed to operate on the mainline.

These were passed in the following order:

  1. Tuesday 17th of March –  New Annual Boiler certificate issued by the insurance company
  2. Wednesday 18th of March – S-Exam and No.1 exams passed by both engine and support coach
  3. Thursday 19th of March – Fitness to Run exam passed by West Coast Railways

With these tests passed, on Friday 20th of March, 60163 moved from the to the National Railway Museum York for storage, where “Tornado” will be kept until mainline tours return.

To ensure 60163 does not suffer any deterioration or damage while being stored during the Coronavirus pandemic, the Trust has taken a number of steps to protect the locomotive.

After a thorough clean at York, the boiler has been filled up and dosed in a protective treatment, both firebox and ashpan cleaned, the piston rods and slide bars have been greased/oiled up, withdrawing the gland trimming, isolating electrics and finally a sheet has been fitted over the length of the engine to protect the paintwork and stop birds entering through the chimney.
