The have continued in March on carrying out winter maintenance work to their new build London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Peppercorn A1 No.60163 “Tornado”.

On the ‘bottom-end' work has been focused on the axleboxes for the coupled wheels and trailing truck.

Greasing of the coupled wheels has involved using a pneumatic greaser, with inspection of trailing truck's Cartazzi axleboxes showing them to be in a good condition for service.

Components for the support coach, such as vacuum cylinders, have been overhauled by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) at their Grosmont Motive Power Depot (MPD).

Back at Darlington Locomotive Works the team have overhauled and tested front and rear air pump lubricators.

Much work in this update has been spent on the reassembling the boiler backhead and cab following repairs.

A new Firehole door mouthpiece has been fitted, allowing the backhead's cladding and cab pipework to be refitted before the cab was lifted back onto the 60163.

Once rebuilt, “Tornado” underwent a steam test which was passed.
