The team restoring Great Western Railway 4575 Class No.5532 have been busy the past 6 months, mostly acquiring components for their engine.
Early 2019 saw work commence on restoring 5532’s Swindon No.5 boiler by Llangollen Railway. Initial work has started by removing the inner firebox to assess its condition.
This is done by cutting off the rivet heads of the old stays and taking out support brackets. After this, the old stays will be drilled out.
In the months leading up to this milestone, the Llangollen Railway Great Western Locomotive Group have been sourcing parts needed to see the boiler steam again. This includes a front tubeplate and firebox backplate.
Since the last update, the Group now have safety valves and injectors, ready to fit onto 5532 when needed.
The next components the team are on the lookout for are a safety valve bonnet and hydrostatic lubricator. If you can help the Group obtain any of these, please do get in touch with them (contact details can be found here)
