The National Railway Museum has announced that two generations of locomotives will line up side by side in a unique event to honour Sir William McAlpine.

Sir William McAlpine is Flying Scotsman’s former owner who died last year.

Taking place at the National Railway Museum in York on Friday 11th January 2019, members of the public will see DB Cargo / LNER Class 90 locomotive number 90028 officially named Sir William McAlpine.

The newly-named locomotive will then join Flying Scotsman in the North Yard for a one-off photo opportunity.

Flying Scotsman will start the day by hauling ‘The Scotsman Salute’ from London Kings Cross to York. The Class 90 locomotive will haul the return leg of this trip back to London King’s Cross later that afternoon.

More information on timings is available here.

Flying Scotsman will remain on display in the North Yard for photography until 5pm.
