Stanhope on shed at the Penrhyn Quarry Railway
Stanhope on shed at the Penrhyn Quarry Railway

Steam locomotive ‘Stanhope’ will be working all of the Apedale Valley Light Railway ‘Santa Specials’ and this will be her last steaming days for a while.

This is due to the loco required a major overhaul and will see the locomotive out of action for most of 2018.

Stanhope is the railway’s flagship locomotive and is a firm favorite at the railway and will be missed.

This means if you want a ride behind the locomotive , then you will need to book on one of the AVLR Santa Specials.

The Santa Specials are heavily booked already, though spaces do remain.

The headboards used are fairly inoffensive on the loco so pictures will look just fine!

Our previous meeting with the locomotive

We saw Stanhope in steam during 2016 whilst it visited the Penrhyn Quarry Railway. Below is our video 🙂

I have had an interest in Railways for as long as I can remember. I am a member of a number of heritage railways and actively volunteer at 2 of them. I enjoy all types of railways, real life, model and simulations. I started RailAdvent in 2014 and am the main editor of the site.
